New guide: safe sensory play at home

Taste-safe sensory play for little ones

Edible play dough, jelly tubs and coloured rice: sensory play that is safe if it ends up in a small mouth.

Babies and toddlers explore with their hands and their mouths, so the safest sensory trays are the ones made from food.

Three easy recipes

Mix flour, oil, salt and a little warm water for a soft play dough. Set plain jelly in a shallow tub and hide plastic animals inside. Shake rice with a few drops of food colouring and let it dry before pouring.

Keep it safe

Stay close while your child plays, avoid whole grains and dried beans for under-threes, and check for allergies before using wheat or dairy.
