Our Journey

From Vision to Voice

How a small group of journalists in a coffee shop built a newsroom read in more than 150 countries.

Our story

Zawiyat Al Khabar began in 2015 at a corner table in a coffee shop in Jabal Al Weibdeh, where four journalists met after their shifts to talk about the stories they never had room to tell. They wanted news that gave readers the facts first, and then the context to understand them.

The first site went live that autumn with a handful of health and politics stories. Our founding editor, Maya Ezzeddine, set two rules that still guide the newsroom: every number needs a source, and every story should answer the question “what does this mean for me?”

Today our team in Amman covers health, politics, business, science, world news, sport and the arts, and tips from our readers still shape much of what we report.
